When approaching the island from its south-eastern shores somewhere in the 1800, the British sailors observed the glittering in the sunlight slopes of the crater. What they believed to be diamonds, was actually the calcite crystals in the lava rock. And so many houses, called Hale in Hawaiian are named in the area something with "Diamond Head" in it.
